Existing Conditions & Deficiencies
The Grand Rapids Metropolitan area, including the Study Area, is growing at a pace greater than the state as a whole. Population for the Grand Rapids Metropolitan area increased by an estimated 14% between 1990 and 2000 and is expected to increase by 22% between 2000 and 2025. The area included in the Southwest Study Area increased by 16%, between 1990 and 2000 and is also projected to increase by 22% between 2000 and 2025 (see Figure 2.1.1 and Table 2.1.1).

Major traffic generators within the Study Area include:
Rivertown Crossing Mall in Grandville and the ancillary commercial development surrounding it,
Grand Valley State University in Allendale Township,
Various existing and planned industrial parks throughout the area, and
Numerous large existing and planned high schools
The increase in population creates a corresponding increase in traffic, which at times exceeds the capacity of the current road system during peak-hours. The 24-hour Average Daily Traffic (ADT) increases of select major roadways are depicted in Table 2.1.2. Additional ADT information for other roadways can be found in Appendix D.
