Nonmotorized Transportation

About

GVMC is responsible for planning for all modes of transportation in the Grand Rapids metropolitan region including pedestrian and bicycle traffic. A GVMC Nonmotorized Committee meets regularly to discuss pedestrian and bicycle issues. The Committee is responsible for identifying projects and priorities in the region that improve the nonmotorized transportation network.

GVMC Transportation staff works with local communities, road providers, public transit, environmental groups, bicyclists, and the general public to help these projects and priorities become a reality. The GVMC Nonmotorized Committee maintains an Active Transportation Plan which is used to guide policy and project decisions related to pedestrian and bicycle issues. The plan is updated regularly to ensure that the needs of the public are being met.

If anyone has interest in participating on the Nonmotorized Transportation Committee, please email or call Mara Gericke, Transportation Planner, at (616) 776-7601.

Active Transportation Plan

The GVMC Active Transportation Plan was developed as an element of the 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) and includes additional information on active transportation in the region. Click here to learn more about the MTP and to view the document.

Nonmotorized Facilities Finder

The GVMC nonmotorized facilities finder is an online mapping application that can be used to view both the existing nonmotorized facilities in the region and the proposed projects listed in the illustrative nonmotorized needs list (linked above).

Report a Near-Miss Incident or Location of Traffic Safety Concern

Have you experienced a “near-miss” incident or observed repeated traffic safety issues at a certain location? The Grand Valley Metropolitan Council (GVMC) has created a tool to anonymously report these traffic safety concerns. The collected information will supplement existing safety data and help us better identify and understand traffic safety issues in the region.

IMPORTANT: If you were involved in a crash, please report it to your local law enforcement agency. If you would like to submit a maintenance request or other non-safety traffic concerns, please report those to your local public works department or
road commission.

Nonmotorized Count Map

The Grand Valley Metropolitan Council began their Nonmotorized Count Program with a pilot in 2021. During the summer of 2021, manual counts were conducted at 19 locations, all of which had undergone nonmotorized infrastructure updates within the previous five years.

GVMC now uses automatic nonmotorized counters that allow counts to be taken around the clock for seven days (Click here for more information). Counts were collected at 22 locations in 2022 and 40 locations in 2023. Count locations include recently implemented project locations, upcoming project locations, and locations requested by GVMC member jurisdictions.
